information on the exhibition
The internet has radically changed our handling of knowledge. How we process, prepare, store and transfer knowledge and its forms has altered substantially from earlier practices. At the same time, the possibilities of digital technology, besides having participatory elements, undergoes aestheticization which develops diverse guises of knowledge and new forms of aesthetic experience.
In cooperation with the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Library (GWLB) and the Leibniz University Hanover, the exhibition bookmarks | knowledge worlds from cuneiform to YouTube deals with contemporary knowledge culture via its most popular development, YouTube. Confronting this current phenomenon are forty-two important books, manuscripts and other works of the last two thousand years from the archives of the GWLB. Some of these treasures will be publicly displayed for the first time. All of these pieces are emblematic of paradigm shifts in knowledge production from previous times. Numerous events and talks will take place during the exhibitions run featuring scholars, writers and artists who will address the exciting questions and phenomena of knowledge worlds from cuneiform to YouTube.
As a forum of communication transfer between art, culture and the public, the kestnergesellschaft will create a laboratory situation during the four weeks of the exhibition in which participation and aestheticization regarding current and previous knowledge production can be explored and experienced in a variety of ways.
