kestnerkids - seeing and making art
How is an oil painting created? What story does the artist tell with his or her work, upon which we see an old, bearded man passing by alone in his canoe? What do we see with our own eyes, and how does the world look when we view it through the eye of a camera? These questions and experiences come to life for children when they visit the kestnergesellschaft. Young children in the company of their parent or guardian can visit exhibitions at the kestnergesellschaft in a guided tour specifically designed for them. Experienced museum educators speak with the children about individual works, explaining an artwork's contents and the artist's technique, intention and biography.
Building on encounters within the gallery, children with artistic interests have the opportunity later to explore their own creative abilities by making art themselves. This segment of the kestnerkids program has been a fantastic success since its beginning in Autumn 2006, with the young participants producing some outstanding work.
The guided tours take place on selected Thursday afternoons. Art making sessions take place on Saturdays. (Please see the German website for the updated schedule of kestnerkids events.)
For an extra special experience, children's birthday celebrations can also be organised within the kestnergesellschaft.
