Young graphic artists, communication experts, art historians, sociologists, philosophers and cultural scientists work and learn together in the recently established kestnerlab. When the kestnergesellschaft was founded in 1916, what was then of primary importance was the encounter with contemporary and international tendencies in art and culture. At the heart of this open, far-sighted and interdisciplinary approach was the conviction that the present is reflected in its totality by and in constant dialogue with cultural and social fields.

With these premises as our point of departure, we set up in 2004 as part of the kestnergesellschaft an interdisciplinary laboratory for student trainees in which students from various creative and scholarly fields are given the opportunity to demonstrate their capabilities and knowledge in the ongoing, practical life of a modern exhibition house. According to their respective fields of study, this involves participation in the conception and realization of exhibitions, the composition of texts, the creation of catalogues, the development of invitations and posters, press work, guided tours for school classes, etc.

The volunteers of the kestnergesellschaft and the instructors of the colleges accompany and supervise the project tasks of the laboratory. The kestnerlab takes place in cooperation with the University of Hildesheim and the Technical College Hannover. Furthermore, students are especially welcome within the framework of international exchange programs.
